How to Wash Silk Pillowcases and Sheets

Updated November 4, 2026 · The Belle Flower Silk

How do you wash a silk pillowcase? Check its care label, then use the permitted hand-wash or machine-wash method with cool water and a detergent labeled suitable for silk. Handle the fabric gently, rinse thoroughly, and air-dry as directed. Avoid wringing, chlorine bleach, and dryer heat. If the label says “dry clean only,” do not wash it at home.

The important decision comes before the water: what does this particular pillowcase allow? An all-silk sheet, a silk-front pillowcase, and bedding with silk on only some panels can require different care. This guide walks you through choosing a method, washing without unnecessary friction, and handling the questions that come up afterward.

Before you wash: read the label and check both sides

Remove the pillow insert and look for the sewn-in care label. Check the permitted washing method, maximum temperature, bleaching restrictions, drying instructions, and ironing symbol. A temperature limit alone does not tell you whether machine washing is allowed.

Next, read the full material description. “Silk front” means the front panel is silk; it does not mean the entire pillowcase is silk. Satin describes a weave, rather than a fiber, so a satin-like reverse should not be assumed to have the same composition as the front. Clean the complete item according to its own instructions.

Which washing method should you use?
Your care label says Your next step
Hand wash Use the hand-washing steps below and the label’s temperature limit. A washer’s “hand wash” cycle is still machine washing.
Machine wash permitted Follow the specified cycle and temperature; protect a pillowcase in a mesh delicates bag.
Dry clean only, do not wash, or unclear instructions Use the prescribed professional cleaning method, or confirm the instructions with the seller before wetting the fabric.

Gather a few simple supplies

  • A clean basin for hand washing, or a mesh delicates bag for machine washing.
  • A laundry detergent explicitly labeled suitable for silk and for your chosen washing method.
  • A clean white towel and a shaded place to air-dry the item.

Use the detergent’s dosing instructions for the water volume or load size. “Gentle” on the front of a bottle is less useful than a clear statement that the formula is suitable for silk. Keep chlorine bleach and general-purpose stain treatments out of the routine; our Silk Care guide also advises against fabric softener.

How to wash a silk pillowcase by hand

Use this method when your item permits hand washing. There is no universal soaking time that suits every silk finish, dye, and construction.

  1. Prepare the pillowcase. Check for stains and loose seams. Turn it inside out and handle any closure according to the item’s instructions. Wash a new or strongly colored piece separately.
  2. Mix the wash water. Fill a clean basin with cool water within the care label’s limit. Mix in the measured silk-suitable detergent before adding the fabric.
  3. Move it gently through the water. Submerge the pillowcase and swish it lightly. Do not scrub the surface or rub one part against another. Follow any washing-time instructions supplied with the item or detergent; do not add a long soak as an extra cleaning step.
  4. Rinse thoroughly. Drain the basin and rinse gently in fresh cool water until the detergent is removed. Support the wet fabric rather than pulling it up by one corner.
  5. Press out moisture. Place the pillowcase on a clean white towel, fold or roll the towel around it, and press lightly. Unroll promptly. Do not twist or wring the silk.

How to wash a silk pillowcase in a washing machine

Machine washing is an option only when the specific item permits it. Silk content or a higher momme weight is not permission to use a washer.

  1. Protect the fabric. Turn the pillowcase inside out and put it in a mesh delicates bag with room to move.
  2. Choose a compatible load. Keep it away from towels, denim, hooks, and exposed zippers. Separate colors that could transfer dye, and do not pack the drum tightly.
  3. Set the permitted cycle and temperature. For washable silk, a cool, delicate setting is a common approach, but the item’s instructions take priority. Check the washer’s guidance if its settings are unclear.
  4. Dose the detergent for the actual load. Use a silk-suitable formula approved for your machine. More detergent does not make a small load cleaner.
  5. Remove it when the cycle finishes. Support the damp pillowcase, reshape gently, and move on to the drying method its label allows.

No mesh bag available? If hand washing is permitted, that gives you an alternative. Avoid improvising a tightly tied bundle or washing an unprotected pillowcase among rough laundry.

How to dry, iron, and store silk pillowcases

After gently pressing out water, reshape the pillowcase and air-dry it in the shade. Lay it flat on a clean drying surface or hang it if the label permits. Keep it away from radiators and direct sunlight. A damp pillowcase should be supported rather than stretched across a narrow edge.

Do not use a hot dryer to speed things up. Follow the drying symbol even if the item came through the wash looking fine. Washing permission and tumble-drying permission are separate instructions.

For creases, check whether ironing is allowed. Use the permitted low setting, work from the reverse where appropriate, and place a clean pressing cloth between the iron and fabric. If the label prohibits ironing, leave the iron off.

Let the pillowcase dry completely before putting it back on a pillow or storing it. Keep clean bedding loosely folded in a dry place away from light; breathable storage is useful for longer periods.

How to wash silk sheets and mixed-material bedding

The same label checks apply to sheets and duvet covers, but their size changes the practical work. Use a clean basin large enough to handle the item without tugging, and support wet sections as you lift them. For machine-washable bedding, follow the appliance’s capacity guidance and leave the fabric room to move. Check each piece of a set rather than assuming the pillowcases, cover, and sheet share one construction.

The Belle Flower silk-front pillowcases

Our 50 × 72 cm silk-front pillowcases are listed with a 100% silk front and an imitation-silk reverse. Their product pages state that they are machine washable. Use the supplied care label for the exact temperature and drying requirements; the words “machine washable” alone do not establish those settings.

Golden Botanica: 25 momme, 100% silk

The Golden Botanica Four-Piece Bedding Set is listed as 25 momme, 100% silk. Its current care information specifies washing below 30°C (86°F), no bleach, hanging to dry, and ironing below 110°C (230°F); professional dry cleaning is also permitted. The temperature limit does not, by itself, confirm a machine-washing method. Check the supplied label before choosing one.

Champagne Reverie: different materials in different panels

The Champagne Reverie Four-Piece Bedding Set combines 25 momme silk sections with cotton/polyester sections. It is not an all-silk set. Its current care information calls for gentle hand washing, pressing out water without twisting, and hanging in the shade. Do not use the cotton/polyester sections as a reason to put the whole piece through a hotter cotton cycle.

For either set, the instructions supplied with your item take priority. If they differ from the product page or are missing, contact us with the product name and a photo of the label before washing. You can compare the materials and dimensions in our Silk Bedding collection.

Stains, dullness, and other wash-day problems

Makeup, skincare, or an oily mark

Blot fresh excess with a clean white cloth rather than rubbing it into the weave. For a washable item, use a treatment only when it is explicitly suitable for silk and consistent with the care instructions. Test an inconspicuous area as directed. Persistent, unfamiliar, or large stains are a reason to consult a professional cleaner, rather than try a stronger household chemical.

The pillowcase feels stiff or looks dull

Consider detergent residue first, without assuming that every change is reversible. If the item allows washing, a gentle rinse according to its care directions may help remove remaining detergent. Do not add a vinegar bath or fabric softener as an automatic fix. A changed surface can also reflect damage; repeated treatments may make it worse.

Color runs or the shape changes

Stop experimenting and seek advice from the seller or a cleaner experienced with silk. Avoid heat and rubbing. The Drycleaning & Laundry Institute’s silk-care guidance explains that water, friction, and household products can affect silk’s appearance, and that color loss may be permanent.

Silk pillowcase washing FAQs

How often should you wash a silk pillowcase?

A weekly wash is a practical starting point for a pillowcase in regular use. Utah State University Extension includes pillowcases and sheets in its weekly laundry guidance. Wash sooner when there is visible soil, perspiration, or product buildup, using the method your item permits. Keeping a clean spare lets you change the pillowcase without rushing its drying.

Can you wash mulberry silk the same way?

The word “mulberry” does not replace a care label. Check the full item’s construction, finish, and washing directions. Do not assume that every product described simply as silk is mulberry silk.

Can you use regular detergent, shampoo, or dish soap?

Choose a laundry product that explicitly lists silk as a suitable fabric. Do not substitute shampoo or dish soap just because it feels mild; a product designed for hair or dishes is not confirmation that it is suitable for your pillowcase or washing machine.

Can you wash silk pillowcases with cotton sheets?

A shared color is not enough. The items must have compatible washing instructions, detergent requirements, and handling needs. Washing a silk pillowcase separately from a regular cotton-sheet load makes it easier to avoid a cycle, temperature, or drying setting that is too harsh for it.

Do 19, 22, or 25 momme fabrics need different wash settings?

Momme describes silk fabric weight, rather than a universal wash setting. A heavier fabric can still have restrictive care instructions. Use the item’s label to choose the method, temperature, and drying process.

What if the care label is missing?

Ask the seller for the care instructions for the exact item. Share its name, order details, and any available label photos. Until the method is clear, do not use a generic silk-washing guide as permission to wet-clean it.
